This is a collection of projects and works by me, Asmus Lauridsen. I work with a multidisciplinary approach to visual design. I create books, printed matters, data visualization, visual identities, websites and digital design. I graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, The Design School (KADK).

Leading principles

As a visual designer, I believe aesthetics and visual culture to be an entrance to understand how we organize ways of seeing and thinking. I find frictions and tensions to be interesting tools for a practice where design can be deconstructed and rediscovered. It might sound abstract, but choosing a typeface can take use of this practice; typefaces are historical objects with different connotations and references. It talks to us from the past but is alive in the present and relates us to the future by creating new meaning and friction.

Working in the field of design with terms such as friction and tension, research is at the center. When I work on large scale projects I usually use anthropological and sociological inspired methods. Here I step into the topic through fieldwork, collecting objects, understanding cultural and ritual traditions, taking photos and conducting interviews. As a part of my method, I also step out of the topic and look at it from a distance: What kind of historical background is tied to the subject? Which ideas, thoughts and words are attached to it? The history and the normative ideas can often explain the development of a design and lay the ground for new, alternative designs.

Most of my work is initiated by my own curiosity and developed through collaborations with other designers, architects, journalists, anthropologists etc. I collaborate to develop visual identities and conceptual ideas for printed, spatial, and digital mediums. This includes working with typography, infographics, editorial design, installations and objects. My design language has roots in a simplistic, modernist tradition and I try to balance my practice between an investigative and conceptual framework as well as having an eye on the communicative aspect of the design.

Omløb studio

Freelance graphic design studio together with Emilia Michalsdotter (visual designer, DK). We create books, printed matters, visual identities, websites and digital design.

Euro-Pass

In collaboration with Joram Raaijmakers (special designer and researcher, NL) and Rasmus Hage Dalland (writer and journalist, DK).

The project Euro-Pass, follow the outer borders of Europe and the EU to document and understand how borders physically and mentally shape our lives; which tensions and friction they create. Based on design and architecture, we explore how different structures, objects, materials and human interaction together constitute a border. We try to bring this knowledge forth in new ways; through field studies, mapping, categorizing and analyzing and showcase the research in exhibitions, publications and articles.

Pengespekulation (Money Speculation)

In collaboration with Johanne Aarup Hansen (relational designer and researcher, DK) and Jack Jones (visual anthropologist and researcher, UK).

Pengespekulation is a design-anthropological collective that explores the economic world through material and semiotic phenomena. We map relationships between socio-cultural resources, institutional units, communities, and economic technologies such as money. Parts of the work has been integrated and showcased in books, exhibitions, and workshops.

2015, Editorial design

The publication is based on the analogue photo collection by Joram Raaijmakers. The photos are presented as objects, and therefore shown as both frontsides and backsides. The two sides of the photos are separate in two books with a mirrored layout.
